“Few iOS apps are as thoughtfully designed as Molecules, and even fewer combine superb visuals with clear writing that encourages exploration.”

“Molecules uses its predecessor as a springboard to further greatness.”

A book about molecules, and a chance to touch, stretch and twist them!

Molecules by Theodore Gray is the extraordinary sequel to The Elements, the bestselling book and app. It continues the story of the elements to show how they are assembled into the rich diversity of compounds, chemicals, molecules, rocks, and stuff that make up our world.

The app includes an important world first: a touch-interactive molecular dynamics simulation that lets you poke and prod hundreds of different molecules, seeing how each one reacts to your touch. Molecules are not static things – they twist, turn, vibrate, and spin in an elaborate and beautiful dance of quantum mechanics.

The app incorporates the NAMD simulation engine developed by the Theoretical and Computational Biophysics Group at the University of Illinois. These are serious, scientifically accurate simulations. A few minutes playing with them will give you a deeper intuition about the true nature of molecules than years of study on paper. And while they are serious science, they are also a whole lot of fun to play with!

In addition to the amazing wiggling molecules, the app contains the entire book of Molecules, with all the objects interactively rotatable so you can see them from all sides. Going further than The Elements, the app includes dozens of innovative and intriguing “still life videos” that reveal the true nature of substances through close-up interactive video.

Features include:

• Try out the first ever touchscreen-interactive molecular dynamics
• Bend, squeeze and shape 348 different molecules using multiple fingers
• Increase or decrease the temperature and see how molecules react
• Read the full text of all 14 chapters of Molecules by Theodore Gray
• Understand the movements of molecules in a special chapter for the app
• See over 500 videos and rotations of incredible objects photographed by Nick Mann

Pros and cons of Molecules by Theodore Gray app for iPhone and iPad

Molecules by Theodore Gray app good for

This application, molecules, gives people, young and old, a view of the nanoworld educating you in a fun and magical way. I recommend this app to anyone who enjoys learning. By L-A Lobanov
This is a good app but it needs editing. When there are several molecules on a page sometimes they are not labelled and nit next to the appropriate text, and there are frequent right-left errors. (Sometimes when describing location of methyl groups.) Trying to spin images near the margins is too likely to change pages instead. Some text does not work in the iPad version ("table on this page" is actually on the next.) Display of page numbers would be helpful. Finally, I am surprised here is nothing more specific about stereoisomers, e.g., ephedrine and pseudoephedrine.
Very useful and illustrative app with simple explanations. Please add other languages!

Some bad moments

I have a job that doesnt involve any science, so this app was an eye-opener. This app was well-written, humorous, but having a sense of wonder.
Absolutely exquisite and wonderfully written. Ive been a bioanalytical chemist for 17 years and I fell in love with molecules a long time ago but I also teach a chemistry of life course for non-science majors and my goal is to present scientific principles in a way that anyone can not only understand but also appreciate the beauty of. This book does that and more. And Im only on chapter 2.
This app is absolutely beautiful. This type of educational tool is going to revolutionize how people learn and think about chemistry. If youve ever wanted to touch and play with the physics underlying chemistry, this app is a must have.
It explains molecules and shows how they work, nice work on the app it must of took you a long time to write the book!
I went into this app with high expectations after the remarkable quality of "The Elements" and "The Planets." I was not disappointed. If anything, my expectations were far too low. The notion of an entire digital coffee table-style book about molecules seems a little odd, to say the least, but it turns out that its incredibly fun to manipulate molecules in scientifically-accurate 3D models. To look at the models of medications I take to understand better how they differ from precursor medicines, or to read about why two similar molecules have wildly different characteristics, is fascinating. And this book presents a lot of basic and important scientific knowledge in an engaging and surprisingly conversational tone. This is exactly the sort of thing that makes technology in general and the iPad in particular a must for schools and education. Magnificent.
I loved and then hated chemistry in high school. This book made me fall back in love all over again! I have never seen chemistry laid out this beautifully. Thanks for bringing good to this world
